Wichita Lineman

I was a lineman for the county

and I drove the main road

Searchin’ in the sun

for another overload

Then life started moving faster,

satellites filled the sky

Until a land line was something

no one wanted to buy

So I got a long vacation

It didn’t come with a dime

The poles along the main road

I no longer climb

I still need you more than want you

And I want you for all time

But what’s a Wichita Lineman

When you don’t need a line?

Written September 2023, after “Wichita Lineman” written by Jimmy Webb, performed by Glen Campbell.

This was part of my 2023 appearance on Interprotations, a Tyler Hawes event, where three different artists covered/interpreted the same set list in very different ways.
